...No, this rant is not about capitalization or grammar. ("He say he want to be friends" is going to be a new catch phrase of mine, though.) This is about something completely different.

Are there any other science fiction/fantasy fans who want to add to this?

*There are basically two paths to take in this fandom:

1) "My ship can beat up your ship!" "But mine can beat up that one!"

2) Xenophilia.

Dear Lewis fandom,

Our two main characters are gorgeous and complex and the subtext is lovely.  And don't get me wrong: I love slash.  Love it.  And Lewis/Hathaway is a lovely pairing.  But...can we maybe have something else once and while?  If not some nice genfic, maybe at least some different pairings?  Hathaway/Will, or some past Lewis/Morse?  Or maybe even pairings that involve neither of the main characters?  And what about het?  Lewis has such nice chemistry with practically every girl in the show, and it is canon that he loved Val a great deal.

It's wonderful that we are all in agreement that the Lewis/Hathaway pairing rocks...it's such a change from the shipping wars of other fandoms.  But variety is a good thing.

After my current batch of hatchlings and eggs hatch/grow up, I'll probably take a break for a while. I'm sure you guys are getting sick of clicking, lulz ;O;

The setting for this is modern day, US, probably California.

Googled 'degenerative brain disease' but the results were all about the elderly. Googled 'diminished mental capacity'/variations but what I came up with was about how it pertains to law. And I'm not really sure how to go about researching something like this with the specific but broad criteria I have.

Basically, I need an injury or some kind of disease that could cause diminished mental capacity in a previously relatively healthy late teens/early twenties male. It can be caused by any number of things: disease-as previously mentioned, drug OD, car crash, fight, suicide attempt (character has a history of depression), etc. His background is changeable based on what I decide to go with.

I would prefer that he retain relatively functional motor skills, or at least be able to regain them through therapy in the case of an injury. If it's a result of injury I would prefer it not leave him massively crippled, but recovery time being long isn't an issue. In patient/out patient time in a hospital/therapy doesn't matter, actually I'd prefer something that keeps him in it more.

I can do further research on my own, I just really need the basics for the possibilities for this because I have no idea where to start.

This is Wild Child during the time he was on X-Factor. This is Wild Child in his current 'psycho bondage elf' look. This is Wild Child in the Age of Apocalypse.

I know he's not a popular of a feral as Wolverine and Sabretooth, seeing as he rarely appears in the more popular comics. But he was trained by Wolverine during Wolvy's Alpha Flight days. Wolverine has had to hunt him down and stop him from killing people. Wild Child's bounced from jail to government superhero programs and back, has this amazingly angsty past, he's led Alpha Flight, and Sabretooth seems to take especial enjoyment out of trying to push Wild Child over the edge into unthinking psycho killerdom! And Wild Child's currently running around in black leather and beating the shit out of Wolverine!

He's got this gorgeous long blond hair! He heals! He's faster than Wolverine and Sabretooth! He's had a long history with both Wolverine and Sabretooth, and the entirety of Alpha Flight! He's at least fascinating-looking, even when he's not downright gorgeous! He is an incredibly tragic character with Marvel making him into karma's bitch from the Great White North! WHY IS THE ONLY SLASH I CAN FIND A FEW KISSES WITH JEAN-PAUL!

There's an alternate universe where Wolverine, Wild Child, and Sabretooth were running around naked in the Canadian wilderness as a completely feral pack! There's the Age of Apocalypse! Where Sabretooth met Wild Child in a jail cell, fought for dominance for three days, and now leads Wild Child around on a leash!

I'm writing a fanfiction for the manga Blade of the Immortal, a story taking place in Edo period Japan. One of the characters have worked as a geisha and is a skilled shamisen player and singer (with her weapon hidden in her instrument. Naturally).

I want to write a scene with her singing and accompanying herself, but since I'm not very familiar with traditional japanese culture or music at all, I'm having some problems.


My question: Can I find translated Nagauta lyrics anywhere on the net, and preferable some audio clips or downloads as well?

I have tried googling nagauta, shamisen, geisha musicians, kabuki etc, but mostly ended up with descriptions of how the genre evolved and reviews of books that would be very useful if I could afford bying heavy volumes just to write a silly fic. I've also searched through the music section of the city library. Nothing useful there.

I'd love to be able to include parts of the lyrics into the text and be able to describe her performance in more detail, as it's a crucial part to the scene.

Anything else you can tell me about Nagauta when not performed on the Kabuki stage but in more informal settings would be very useful as well. Thanks beforehand!

1. I don't care what actors you want portraying your OC's/established canon characters. I mean, it's great that you think Actor X would be a great choice for Character X, but do you really need to insert this in your fanfiction?

I'm sorry, but when your summary states things like "This is a Nolanverse-set story about Harley Quinn, who I think should be played by Christina Ricci!" or your Author's Notes state things like "In case you're wondering, my OC looks like Mischa Barton", I refuse to take you seriously. (Sadly, real-life writers pull that crap too...I'm looking at you, Dan Brown.) Is it that difficult to just describe your characters?

2. Batman author: According to you, the Joker's real name is Heath and he's actually from Austrailia. That is so many levels of fail right there. I'm...kind of lost for words. (I'm not so oversensitive as to be appalled, but I am shaking my head sadly.)

nothing makes me [and probably quite a lot of other potential readers] hit the back button faster than spelling errors along the lines of "wanings" or "raiting".

Hello everyone! I am going to an engagement party tomorrow. We have been requested to maybe bring some wine to celebrate, but I also would like to bring a little munchy. I asked the future bride, and she said the theme is Mexican. That confused me a bit - I was going to look for recipes that go along with wine, but the Mexican theme threw me off. It looks like there might be 40 people there; any ideas that would go over well as an appetizer (or even dessert!) given the constraints of theme and wine? Sounds weird to me too...

Here also is today's lunch: stuffed squash with my ground beef and a modification to Kay's country parm potatoes (I mash mine up a bit as I like how the spices and flavors distribute that way,and used a yellow pepper).

Ok this feels really strange. Normally I would be in San Francisco right now, starting another semester. Staying home is just...weird.

God I love days of lazing about doing nothing but watching movies with my sister. I was going to clean the house, but Brookie somehow convinced me to rent The Amityville Horror remake and watch that with her. Help! I really need a Grimm fairy tale in which blindness is a crucial part of the plot, but neither my memory nor Google is coming up with anything (except blind mice and that is not helpful).

I *really* want a blind princess, or failing that a queen. I found that Italo Calvino's collection of Italian folk tales has one called Three Blind Queens, but for various reasons I need the Brothers Grimm (or a German folktale).

If I can't find anything I'll adapt TBQ but any suggestions will be welcomed.

ETA: I'm going with Rapunzel, and there are additional blind people in Cinderella (in some versions) and Hansel and Gretel. Thanks!

I'm in San Diego, and was getting settled in, and then the Internet in our room went out completely yesterday!  We finally convinced them to change our room, but too late for an Open Thread--I just collapsed.

However, it looks like this room's Internet connection is holding steady and I should actually be around for any conversation this week!  *dances*

How have things been?  I'm not going to ever catch up on what I've missed, I know, but has everyone had a good couple of weeks?

I know chibi is usually translated as small, but if you want to say small in Japanese, you don't actually say chibi. The word is chiisai.

Chibi, on the other hand, is like calling someone runt, squirt, shrimp, things like that. Chibiusa, for example, isn't really "Small Usagi" so much as it is "Shorty Usagi".

Meaning, only very mean parents would actually name their kids something like Chibineko or Chibisakura. Or Chibi-anything, really. Keep that in mind when naming your speshul OC.
